Project: First Accessible Educational Eco-Trail & Visitor Information Center
Every architectural practice has a defining moment—a project that moves beyond drawings and construction to become a statement of intent. For us, Arch. Daniella Slavova and Arch. Bozhidar Hinkov, that moment was the realization of the educational eco-trail in the “Dragostinov Chark” locality above Bansko.
This project did not just mark the opening of a facility; it shaped the beginning of our practice, Arrogant Architects. It established the core values that drive our studio today: a commitment to sustainability, forward-thinking social integration, and the belief that good design should be accessible to everyone.
A First of Its Kind
We are proud to announce that this project is officially recognized as the first eco-trail of its kind in Bulgaria specifically designed to be accessible for people with disabilities.
The challenge was to intervene in the rugged terrain of Pirin National Park without disrupting it, creating a seamless flow for people with specific needs. Our design focused on specialized flooring, adaptive approaches to recreation areas, and fully accessible facilities—from the parking lot to the children’s playground and information boards.
High-Level Recognition
The significance of this endeavor was marked by a high-profile inauguration attended by NDSV leader and former Prime Minister Simeon Saxe-Coburg-Gotha and his wife, Margarita.
The event also welcomed the Swiss Ambassador, Rudolf Knoblauch, marking his first official visit to Bansko. The project was realized with the financial support of the Swiss government, cited by Ambassador Knoblauch as a prime example of successful cooperation between Bulgaria and Switzerland in environmental protection.
Design with Impact
The true measure of our work, however, is found in the user experience. During the opening, MP Denitsa Dimitrova, a wheelchair user herself, inaugurated the trail. Her reaction validated our design philosophy:
“I want to show all other people in my situation that there are corners in Bulgaria where we, who have mobility difficulties, can touch the beauty of Bulgarian nature and enjoy it.” — Denitsa Dimitrova
The Foundation of Arrogant Architects
Successfully coordinating with the Ministry of Environment and Water, the National Trust EcoFund, and the Center for Independent Living proved that complex regulatory environments can yield beautiful, sustainable results.
This project laid the groundwork for Arrogant Architects as a successful endeavor. It demonstrated that bold architecture is not just about aesthetics—it is about opening doors (and trails) to the world for everyone.
