La Certosa² Premieres at the 5th Monaco Smart & Sustainable Marina Rendezvous

A New Tectonic Ground for Venice Takes Center Stage in Monaco

We are thrilled to announce that Arrogant Architects successfully premiered our flagship project, La Certosa² (also known as SQUARE), at the 5th Monaco Smart & Sustainable Marina Rendezvous. Held on September 21–22, 2025, at the prestigious Yacht Club de Monaco, the event served as the perfect global stage to unveil our vision for the future of coastal development.

Our team, led by Prof. Arch. Bozhidar Hinkov and Arch. Jacqueline Dimitrova, was joined by our strategic partners Alberto Carpanese (Sea the Change) and Eileen Horowitz (Ecocentric). Together, we showcased how architectural excellence can be synthesized with bold innovation and the inherent wisdom of the natural world.

The Project: Architecture as a Living Organism

La Certosa² re-imagines Venice’s Certosa Island not as a passive monument, but as a living, productive landscape. The project introduced a “man-made geology” born from a rational modular grid, featuring:

  • The Elevated Park: A grand public piazza of cascading terraces that creates a dynamic stage for public life.

  • The Circularity Node: A productive core housing a hub that recycles abandoned boat hulls (GRP) and lagoon plastics into new structural materials.

  • Energy Autonomy: A system powered by floating photovoltaic installations and seawater heat pumps for zero-emission thermal regulation.

  • Ecological Intelligence: A dedicated lagoon research center and “living seawalls” designed to restore the fragile marine ecosystem.

By engineering buildings as active, responsive systems, we aim to minimize energy consumption and mitigate both operational and embodied .

Synergy in Practice: Collaborating for Change

The premiere emphasized our “Cooperation Over Competition” philosophy. Our partnership with Sea the Changeallowed us to link ocean conservation directly with architectural design. As Alberto Carpanese noted during the event, the goal is to create an “intelligent organism” that generates authentic, replicable value for both communities and ecosystems.

A key highlight of our presentation was the strong connection established with Alberto Sonino, the visionary behind the development of Certosa Island. His commitment to sustainable yachting and the regeneration of the Venetian lagoon perfectly aligns with the SQUARE methodology. This collaboration ensures that our project remains deeply rooted in the practical realities and maritime heritage of Venice.

For Arrogant Architects, this premiere is just the beginning. Our work continues to act as a laboratory for developing visionary, sustainable design solutions across the globe—from the historical waters of Venice to the upcoming luxury horizons of Barcelona and Miami.

“Sustainability is not an afterthought or a ‘green’ veneer; it is the fundamental cornerstone of our practice.”
