The Urban Lung – From Asphalt Fortress to Breathing Ecosystem
The Manifesto Context The era of the school as a closed, asphalt-heavy institution is over. At 138th Secondary School, we are moving “Beyond the Gates” to replace restrictive boundaries with a vibrant social ecosystem. This project is not a mere renovation; it is a surgical re-engineering of the urban DNA, proving that architecture is the most powerful tool for neighborhood connectivity.
The Architectural Intervention Faced with a polarized debate between the need for professional sports facilities and a desire for lush greenery, our design acts as the ultimate mediator. We refused to choose. By intelligently scaling a high-performance sports hub—featuring an adaptable football pitch and athletics track—we preserved enough space to transform the remaining barren asphalt lot into a multi-functional green park.
The New Academic Wing We have built the school’s missing “heart”: a new academic wing housing a light-filled atrium and a massive 915 sq.m sports and assembly hall. Designed with modularity and the future in mind, the interior features flexible layouts that can evolve with educational needs. Crowning the structure is a unique rooftop “Green Terrace,” an outdoor classroom where students learn through direct contact with nature.
